Around this hill, La Haie-Sainte, the balls ricocheted on the paved road close to Napoleon. Just as at Brienne, cannon balls and bullets whistled over his head…

It was at this last station that the Emperor said to his guide Lacoste, a hostile peasant, frightened, tied to a hussar’s saddle, turning away at every volley of grapeshot, and trying to hide behind Napoleon: ”Idiot, this is shameful. You’ll get yourself shot in the back.”
